Walking Adventures in Iceland:
Land of Fire and Ice
To many, the name Iceland may evoke thoughts of ice and cold temperatures. But, this small and beautiful Mid-Atlantic island has more to offer than you may think. Iceland not only has a relatively mild climate
due to its position on the Gulf Stream, but it is also home to an amazingly diverse landscape full of natural wonders and hidden gems.
From lush green farmland, steep-sided fjords and miles of moss-covered, hardened lava fields to slow-moving glaciers, roaring rivers and towering waterfalls,
Iceland is nothing short of an exciting and awe-inspiring land of contrasts.
Southern Treks’ Iceland Trip covers the best of Iceland, including the
popular natural wonders, such as Geysir and Gullfoss,
but we will also take you on a discovery of the lesser-traveled, softer side of the quaint country.

 | Our journey begins with a relaxing, long dip in the Blue Lagoon after a short five-hour flight from Boston. Although Iceland has thousands of thermal pools,
the Blue Lagoon is the most spectacular with its natural sky blue waters atop a white silica mud base.
After a night’s stay in the vibrant capital city of Reykjavik, we fly north to the town of Akureyri and begin our trek through the Northern and Eastern parts of the country. There, we will walk alongside Iceland’s “Grand Canyon” to the massive and powerful Dettifoss waterfall,
view whales and dolphins in the dramatic northern coastal town of Husavik, and trek through fields of fertile farmland passing woolen sheep, beautiful Icelandic
horses and wild widespread lupine. We will discover the Eastern fjords, reminiscent of Norway, quaint villages, traditional sod-covered homes and a number of historical and geologically significant landmarks, such as the country’s famous
glaciers and
volcanoes. As we make our way across the south to Reykjavik, we will watch playful puffins and other birds nest on seaside cliffs, learn about the country’s colorful wildflowers and dine on delicious fresh Icelandic seafood and lamb.
Our journey is guided by the knowledgeable and entertaining Andy Dennis, who has a PhD in Old Icelandic Law from Cambridge. Although he hails from New Zealand, Dennis has spent decades in Iceland, guiding hiking tours, conducting research and more recently, serving Brennivin and shark to visitors in a small fishing village in East Iceland. This walking tour consists primarily of day hikes, which are suitable for all levels of fitness. Our trip not only receives accolades from our clients, but Frommer’s Iceland Guide Book also recommends Southern Treks’ Iceland Tour. We are one of only three U.S.-based tour operators noted in the most recent edition of the popular guidebook series.
